Handmade or Factory-Made Mattress? For Sweeter Dreams
You may just be tempted to look at the mass-produced mattresses available at a fraction of the cost or one of the heavily discounted next day 'boxed mattresses' which have rolled of an assembly line somewhere. But the price is not the only factor that sets handmade and factory-made mattresses apart.
Why handmade? Does the construction and inside of the mattress really matter? Don't machines duplicate the work hands can do?
You have a whole lot of options and the retail world on your doorstep, as a consumer. This might sound dandy, but there is a downside to it. If there are millions of products how are you going to spell the difference between a handmade and machine-made one? The following breakdown will help you know exactly what you will get when you invest in one.
What Makes Natural Mattresses A Better Choice?
Tufting, a detail of a High-quality mattress: Tufts is essential and an indicator of a quality mattress so we thought to give an overview of these unsung heroes. Mattress tufting is a technique that ensures that the layers and the materials stay where they are meant to be without shifting and sagging over time. If the multi-layers are not tufted they won't hold together well, which is the case with conventional mattresses. They try to hold the layers together with adhesives which can off-gas volatile organic compounds, which tend to fall apart with time. The mattresses at Maine Bunk Beds are hand layered by our skilled artisans starting with the firming layers moving up to softer layers, one sheet at a time with a sharp tufting needle.
Hand layered for maximum longevity and support: What if we told you that the layering is actually a vital part of your mattress's comfort and longevity. That simply means that the standard mattresses available in the market are usually a big bag of air with some cotton thrown into it. Unlike hand layered mattresses these sink and seep, losing their density and shape over time. That is obviously not so COMFY! To ensure uniformity in the mattress surface our artisans layer and compress the layers into place before the final tufting takes place. Providing a plush consistent sleeping surface that won't dip or sag quickly.
Note that, our natural fiber mattress only contains raw cotton, virgin lambswool from New Zealand, an optional core of either Evergreen foam or Natural Latex, and an exterior case of either 100% Cotton or Organic Cotton Twill.
Safe ingredients, free from harmful chemicals: Whether you choose organic cotton or green cotton, our mattresses are crafted by hand from raw unprocessed fibers without any added dyes or chemicals. Because the origin of natural materials requires no additional additives in manufacturing and it is one of the most viable options to choose if you want an eco-friendly product. Typically too many pesticides are used in conventional cotton production. And we can't deny the fact that these pesticides are dangerous to humans and animals alike.
